Biographies

Plenary Speakers

    Alister Browne
    ALISTER BROWNE is the Director of the Division of Health Care Ethics and Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Family Practice, Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia. He is an Ethics Consultant for the Vancouver General Hospital and Instructor, Department of Philosophy, Langara College. Alister is a member of the ethics committees of the Vancouver General, Burnaby, BC Children's, BC Rehabilitation and Sunnyhill Hospitals and the Vancouver Health Department Continuing Care Division. He serves on the Board of Directors of the BC Civil Liberties Association and is a member of the Steering Committee for the BC Centre For Excellence in HIV/AIDS St. Paul's Hospital, the Standing Industry Advisory Group on Blood Issues reporting to the Ministry of Health and the Minister's Advisory Committee on Ethical Issues in Health Care.

    Steven Lewis
    STEVEN LEWIS is the C.E.O. of the Health Services Utilization and Research Commission, Province of Saskatchewan. The Commission analyses the use of health services and develops recommendations to improve effectiveness and efficiency, and in general promotes evidence-based change. Steven received a B.A. and an M.A. in political science from the University of Saskatchewan. He has been a member of the National Forum on Health, the Advisory Committee on Health Services to the Federal/Provincial/Territorial Deputy Ministers of Health, the Board of Directors of the Canadian Nurses' Association, the Board of the Saskatchewan Health Information Network, the Health Services Research Review Committee of the Medical Research Council of Canada and the Steering Committee of the Western Canadian Waiting List project funded by Health Canada.

    Edward Keyserlingk
    EDWARD KEYSERLINGK is the Director of the Bioethics Unit; Coordinator, Medical Ethics & Health Law Teaching Program and Associate Professor, Faculty of Medicine at McGill University. His educational background includes a B.A. in Philosophy from Loyola College, LL.M.(Comparative Law), McGill; and PhD. (Ethics), Faculty of Religious Studies, McGill. He is Co-Chair of the Research Ethics Board, Clinical Ethicist and Consulting Specialist at the Montreal General Hospital. He is the Chair of the Ethics and Law Workgroup and an Advisory Committee member of the Bioethics Masters Program. He was a founding member and first President of the Canadian Bioethics Society. Prior to being at McGill, he was Director of the Health Law Department of the Law Reform Commission of Canada.

    Patricia (Paddy) Rodney
    PATRICIA (PADDY) RODNEY is an Assistant Professor at the University of Victoria School of Nursing and a Research Associate with the UBC Centre for Applied Ethics and Providence Health Care Ethics Services. She is a graduate of the UBC School of Nursing's Ph.D. Program. Her clinical background is in critical care nursing. Paddy is a member of the hospital ethics committees of BC Women's Hospital, St. Paul's Hospital and the North Shore Health Region. She is a past member of the Executive of the Canadian Bioethics Society and has been a member of the St. Paul's Hospital DNR Task Force. Her ethnographic research has focused on how nurses deal with ethical problems in their practice and on how the culture of the health care system impairs the moral agency of nurses and other members of the health care team.

Workshops Speakers

  • Paul Byrne is Co-Director of the John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre, University of Alberta (U of A) and Chair, Clinical Ethics Committee & past Director, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, U of A Hospital. He teaches and conducts research in health ethics in the Faculty of Medicine and provides clinical service in the ICU.

  • Greg Eberhart has served as Registrar of the Alberta Pharmaceutical Association (APhA) since January 1990. After graduating from the Faculty of Pharmacy, U of A in 1979, he practiced in several community pharmacy settings. He was elected to the Council of the APhA in 1984 and in 1989 was appointed Association President.

  • Glenn Griener is an Assistant Professor, U of A. He holds joint appointments with the John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre, the Department of Philosophy and the Faculty of Nursing, is a founding member of the Canadian Bioethics Society and was previously a Researcher, Centre for Bioethics, Clinical Research Institute, Montreal.

  • Donna Hoopfer is a nursing consultant with a clinical specialization in perinatal nursing. She completed her doctoral work at the U of A focusing on the appropriateness of an ethic of care for nurses and has proposed a moral framework for nursing practice and education based on respect for persons and an openness to care.

  • Paul Flynne is the Assistant Registrar of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta where one of his areas of responsibility includes the Research Ethics Review Committee. He previously practiced family medicine in Spruce Grove and was a member of the medical staff of the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Stony Plain.

  • George Lucki completed his postgraduate studies in psychology and philosophy. He practices Clinical Psychology in Edmonton and teaches Law and Ethics to marriage and family therapy students at Loma Linda Graduate School, California. He is a past President of the Psychologists' Association of Alberta.

  • Sandra (Sandy) MacPhail is a Project Coordinator, Relational Ethics Project with the John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre, U of A. She completed a Masters in Nursing at the U of A with a thesis concentration on ethical issues faced by community-based nurses. Her background includes work in pediatrics and the community.

  • Sheila Malm is an Associate Professor, Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary. She has a joint appointment with the Office of Medical Bioethics and with the Department of Family Medicine. Sheila received a Fellowship in Clinical Medical Ethics at the University of Chicago in 1996 after a one year course.

  • Pam Munroe was a community representative on the Ethics Committee, Foothills Hospital, Calgary, for over ten years - the last five as Chair. She is the Board Treasurer, Alexandra Community Health Centre, Calgary, and a member of several non-governmental organizations committed to sustainable development and social justice.

  • Laura Shanner is an Associate Professor, John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre & Department of Public Health Sciences, U of A. She contributes to ethics committees, Health Canada policy processes and the Society of Obstetricians & Gynecologists, Canada, and has taught many Bioethics courses including Values in Mental Health.

  • Eleanor Stewart Muirhead has practiced Speech Language Pathology for 15 years and is a doctoral student in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine at the U of A. Eleanor is the Chair, Ethics Committee, Speech Language &Hearing Association of Alberta, and past Chair of the Bioethics Committee, Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital, Edmonton.
