Research Ethics Boards in Alberta

Research Ethics Boards, often called Institutional Review Boards in the United States, exist to conduct prospective review of health research to ensure that human subjects are adequately protected. The following is a list of Research Ethics Boards in Alberta.

Other Relevant Information: The Committee is based at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton. Alberta

Cancer Board researchers in Calgary (Tom Baker Cancer Centre) send their protocols to the Conjoint Health Research Ethics Committee (see below) for approval. If a protocol has investigators at both the Cross Cancer Institute and the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, the protocol can be submitted to the Conjoint Health Research Ethics Committee, whose approval will be accepted by the ACB Ethics Committee.

Community Research Ethics Board of Alberta (CREBA)

Reviews Research: Protocols from researchers in Alberta who are engaged in health-related research which involves people or their health information and who do not have access to another research ethics board. CREBA takes a capacity building approach with practice-based researchers and reviews research from the particular point of view of its impact on individuals, communities and collectivities. Will review (upon request) protocols that have been submitted to other REBs for a parallel review, for the purpose of reviewing the research from a 'community impact' perspective.

    • Purpose: To recommend policy for the conduct of human research; to establish and review ethical guidelines for human research - clinical, behavioral, and social; to guide the work of and receive reports from Faculty Research Ethics Review Boards charged with certifying the ethical acceptability of individual applications; to assign individual applications originating outside of any given Faculty, including outside the University, to an appropriate Faculty Research Ethics Board; to receive appeals of decisions made by Faculty Research Ethics Boards; and to deal with matters arising from the implementation of the University Standards for the Protection of Human Research Participants.
