Research Ethics Boards in Alberta
Updated November 2008
Research Ethics Boards, often called Institutional Review Boards in
the United States, exist to conduct prospective review of health research
to ensure that human subjects are adequately protected. The following
is a list of Research Ethics Boards in Alberta.
Alberta Cancer Board Research Ethics Board

Reviews: All new protocols and annual renewals from ACB researchers in Edmonton.
Other Relevant Information: The Committee is based at the Cross Cancer Institute
in Edmonton. Alberta
Cancer Board researchers in Calgary (Tom Baker Cancer Centre)
send their protocols to the Conjoint Health Research Ethics Committee (see below) for
approval. If a protocol has investigators at both the Cross Cancer Institute and the
Tom Baker Cancer Centre, the protocol can be submitted to the Conjoint Health Research
Ethics Committee, whose approval will be accepted by the ACB Ethics Committee.

and reviews research from the particular point of view of its impact on individuals, communities
and collectivities. Will review (upon request) protocols that have been submitted to other REBs
for a parallel review, for the purpose of reviewing the research from a 'community impact'
perspective.
